Pine Needle Art
Sandi Falk never considered herself an artist until she discovered pine needle basketry during the COVID pandemic. After taking classes with Pomo elder Oshie McGill and Bea Acosta at the Gualala Arts Center, she quickly fell in love with the medium. What began as a curiosity turned into a passion, as Sandi explored contemporary designs, color, and new techniques. Her work has since grown beyond traditional baskets into sculpture and her latest inspiration, Angel Baskets.
For Sandi, each piece is a creative journey—she starts with a center and lets the design unfold naturally, often guided by the materials themselves. She finds joy when her art “speaks” to others and hopes to keep expanding her skills and exploring new directions in pine needle art. Sandi is a member of the Gualala Arts Basketmaking Group and the Bay Area Basket Makers, and her work can be found at exhibits at the Gualala Arts Center and the Coast Highway Art Collective.
